Choy Sum Flowering Pak Choi - Brassica parachinensis

Choy Sum is a crisp, fast growing leafy vegetable grown for its tender leaves, succulent stems and edible flower buds. Harvested just as the flower buds form, the young leaves and stems have a mild, fresh flavour and can be eaten raw or lightly blanched. A versatile Asian green that is excellent in stir fries, soups, steamed dishes and fresh salads.

Packet Quantity: 300 seeds

Planting Instructions

Sowing Time:
All year round. Choy Sum grows particularly well during the cooler months, while in warmer areas it can be grown throughout the year with adequate moisture.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Choose a position with good sunlight and protection from extreme afternoon heat during hot weather.

Soil:
Rich, fertile and well drained soil enriched with compost or well rotted manure. Keep the soil consistently moist throughout growth.

Sowing Depth:
5 mm

Spacing:
Sow directly in rows approximately 40 cm apart. Thin seedlings as they develop, leaving the strongest plants with enough room to grow.

Germination Time:
6 to 10 days.

Harvest Time:
Approximately 6 to 8 weeks from sowing. Harvest when the flower buds have formed but before the flowers fully open.

Growing Tips

Prepare the soil well before sowing by incorporating compost or well rotted manure. Water the garden bed before sowing, then sow seeds directly into rows and cover lightly with soil.

Keep plants well watered throughout the growing period, particularly during warm or dry weather. Consistent moisture encourages tender stems and leaves and helps plants grow quickly.

Keep the growing area weed free while plants are establishing, as competition from weeds can slow growth.

For the best eating quality, harvest when the flower buds have formed and the stems are still young and tender. Cut the stems near the base and use the leaves, stems and flower buds together.

Succession sowing every few weeks can provide a continuous supply of fresh Choy Sum throughout the growing season.
