Coriander Lemon - Coriandrum sativum

Coriander Lemon is a fresh and aromatic variety with a light lemony character. The leaves are highly versatile and can be used fresh in salads, wraps, stir fries, curries, sauces and a wide range of Asian and Mediterranean dishes. The plants are compact and quick growing, making them ideal for garden beds, pots and containers. The seed heads can also be harvested once mature.

Planting Instructions

Sowing Time:
All year round. In warmer areas, sow during the cooler months or provide afternoon shade during Summer to help prevent premature flowering.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Choose a position with good sunlight and protection from intense afternoon heat.

Soil:
Rich, fertile and well drained soil. Incorporate compost or well rotted manure before sowing.

Sowing Depth:
5 mm

Spacing:
Thin seedlings to 20 cm apart.

Germination Time:
7 to 10 days.

Harvest Time:
Harvest leaves as required. Seed heads can be harvested once they turn light brown.

Growing Tips

Sow directly into the final growing position as coriander does not always transplant well. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and while seedlings are becoming established.

Coriander prefers cooler conditions and can bolt quickly during hot weather. In warm areas, growing plants in part shade or providing afternoon shade can help extend the leafy harvest.

Keep plants well watered, particularly during warm or dry periods. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as stress can encourage the plant to flower prematurely.

Harvest the outer leaves as required, taking care not to remove too much foliage at once. For the best flavour, pick leaves regularly while they are young and fresh.

Once the plant begins flowering, allow some plants to develop seed heads if you would like to harvest coriander seed. Wait until the seed heads turn light brown, then cut and dry them in a cool, well ventilated place.

For a continuous supply of fresh leaves, sow a new crop approximately every two weeks. This provides a succession of young plants and helps ensure a steady supply throughout the year.
