Kale Green Curled - Brassica oleracea acephala

Kale Green Curled is a compact variety producing an abundance of tightly curled, deep green leaves. The dwarf plants are ideal for smaller gardens and containers, while the tender leaves can be harvested young as baby greens or allowed to mature for cooking. A hardy and productive leafy vegetable that provides repeated harvests throughout the cooler growing season.

Planting Instructions

Sowing Time:
Late Summer, Autumn and Winter. In warmer areas, kale is particularly well suited to sowing from late Summer through Winter, while cooler regions can extend the growing season into early Spring.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Choose a position with good sunlight and protection from excessive heat.

Soil:
Rich, fertile and well prepared soil. Incorporate compost or well rotted manure before planting and ensure the soil is well drained while retaining adequate moisture.

5 mm

Spacing:
45 cm between plants and 45 cm between rows. For baby leaf production, plants can be grown more closely together.

Germination Time:
7 to 10 days.

Harvest Time:
Approximately 8 to 10 weeks from sowing.

Growing Tips

Prepare the garden bed well before sowing by incorporating plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Water the bed thoroughly before sowing, then sow the seeds directly and cover lightly with soil.

Keep plants well watered throughout the growing season, particularly during warm or dry weather. Consistent moisture encourages tender, healthy leaves.

Kale grows best in cooler conditions and can tolerate light frost once established. In warmer areas, provide some afternoon shade during the hottest part of the year to help prevent stress and premature flowering.

Harvest the outer leaves regularly, leaving the central growing point intact. Young leaves can be picked for salads, while mature leaves are excellent steamed, sautéed, added to soups or used in other cooked dishes.

The compact plants are also well suited to containers. For a continuous supply of fresh leaves, sow successive crops throughout the suitable growing season.

The crown can be cut back at ground level after harvesting to encourage new side shoots and further growth.
