Silver Beet Mixed Colours - Beta vulgaris

Silver Beet Mixed Colours produces a bright blend of colourful stems, with shades ranging from white and yellow through to pink, red and purple. The tender young leaves can be eaten fresh in salads, while mature leaves and stalks are excellent steamed, sautéed or added to stir fries. An easy and productive vegetable that can be harvested repeatedly and is also well suited to growing in pots.

Planting Instructions

Sowing Time:
All year round. Silver beet is adaptable and can be grown throughout the year, although growth is strongest during the cooler months in warmer areas and during spring and autumn in colder regions.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Choose a position with good sunlight and protection from extreme heat where possible.

Soil:
Well drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well rotted manure. Keep the soil consistently moist for strong, leafy growth.

Sowing Depth:
12 mm

Spacing:
Sow several seeds together in clumps, with clumps approximately 40 cm apart and rows 30 cm apart. Thin to 1 strong plant per clump once seedlings are established.

Germination Time:
10 to 14 days.

Harvest Time:
Approximately 8 to 12 weeks from sowing. Leaves can be harvested earlier for baby greens.

Growing Tips

Sow directly into prepared soil and keep well watered while the seeds are germinating. Silver beet is an excellent choice for both garden beds and containers.

Once established, harvest the outer leaves regularly while leaving the centre 4 or 5 stalks intact. This encourages the plant to continue producing fresh leaves and promotes quick regrowth.

Feed plants with a liquid fertiliser approximately every 2 weeks to encourage healthy, vigorous leaf production.

Keep plants well watered, particularly during hot and dry weather. Consistent moisture helps produce tender leaves and prevents plants from becoming stressed.

Harvest leaves as needed by removing the larger outer leaves first. Regular harvesting encourages continued production and can provide fresh leaves over an extended period.
