Tomato Black Krim - Solanum lycopersicum

Tomato Black Krim is a hardy heirloom variety producing large, richly coloured beefsteak tomatoes with a distinctive dark red to dusky purple colour. The fruits have a full, rich flavour and are excellent sliced for sandwiches, wraps, salads and fresh dishes. A productive variety suited to warm growing conditions.

Planting Instructions

Sowing Time:
Spring and Summer. In warmer areas, tomatoes can also be grown into Autumn where conditions remain warm and frost free.

Position:
Full sun. Choose a warm, sheltered position with plenty of sunlight and good air circulation.

Soil:
Rich, fertile and well drained soil. Prepare the soil with plenty of compost or well rotted manure before planting.

Sowing Depth:
5 mm

Spacing:
50 cm between plants.

Germination Time:
10 to 14 days.

Harvest Time:
Approximately 12 to 14 weeks from sowing, or when the fruit is fully ripe.

Growing Tips

Sow seeds into seed raising trays or small pots filled with quality seed raising mix. Firm the mix gently around the seeds and keep consistently moist until germination.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 10 to 15 cm pots to allow them to develop a strong root system. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions before planting into their final position.

Tomatoes perform best when planted into warm, fertile soil after the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sheltered position with plenty of sunlight.

Provide a sturdy stake or support before the plants become heavily loaded with fruit. Black Krim produces large fruits, so good support is particularly important.

Keep plants well watered throughout the growing season, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Water deeply around the base of the plant and try to keep moisture levels consistent.

Pinch out side shoots as they appear to keep the plant manageable and direct more energy towards fruit production. Feed regularly once the first fruit truss has set.

Allow the fruits to ripen fully on the plant for the best flavour. Black Krim develops its characteristic deep colouring as it ripens, with the shoulders often remaining darker than the rest of the fruit.

Harvest carefully once the fruit is ripe and slightly soft to the touch. Regular harvesting encourages continued production throughout the growing season.
